California Yoga + Wine Retreat Nov 21- Nov 24, 2019
Santa Margarita, California
November 21-24, 2019
with Robin & Mark Penney
Robin & Mark Penney (husband and wife) are teaming up to offer a 4-day/3-night Yoga + Wine getaway in the wine country of San Luis Obispo and Paso Robles in the Central Coast of California! Think of this as a pre-holiday-season rejuvenation to sink deeply into movement, mindfulness, organic and delicious food, and an unplugged countryside, all while exploring the fabulous wines of this gorgeous California region.
There’s more to California wine than Napa Valley, and Mark will show you the ropes through comparing Central Coast wines to those of other regions (France and beyond).
The yoga is meant to refuel and reconnect you to your body, breath, strength, and ability to MOVE and enjoy life. Functional movement within a breath-based flow practice is designed to promote graceful aging, getting up and down off the floor with ease, and exploring your range of movement. Meditation and other practices will be incorporated as well to help you sink deeply into this long weekend of self-discovery.
SAN LUIS OBISPO, CALIFORNIA
Your home for this getaway is a boutique-style retreat sanctuary in Santa Margarita, California just outside of San Luis Obispo (halfway between L.A. and San Francisco).
Positioned on a majestic hilltop, surrounded by preserved land on the Central Coast of California, this sustainable family-run 45-acre property is the perfect place to get inspired and grounded.
There are lots of opportunities to explore this tremendous area of California: amazing vineyards, local towns, hiking, stargazing, and of course the ocean and the beach are just 30 minutes away.
A dreamy California destination, this retreat will refuel you for life at home.
SAGRADA WELLNESS
Sagrada Wellness is a 100% solar-powered sanctuary, built with the principles of sustainability and planetary responsibility in mind.
Created and run by an architect husband and an acupuncturist wife, every detail at Sagrada is thoughtfully planned and manifested for a delightful and present experience in the here and now, in alignment with nature.
There is a saltwater pool (warm enough to swim in during the summer and spring…adventurous types might take a plunge in November!). There is also a hot tub, a fire pit, and several short hiking trails on the property to explore.
Sagrada features five private rooms with either queen or king beds. There is also a spacious and lovely communal space that sleeps 6. All accommodations feature shared bathrooms with plenty of space for all. Think of this as a community experience that feels like we are sharing one home, as we do our planet Earth.
The yoga and meditation room is fully stocked with props.
A wifi-free zone: though the cell phone service is excellent, you might consider unplugging and take a digital detox!
Organic and local, the cuisine is delicious, rustic, and vegetarian. We’ll be pairing local wines with dinner (and more!).

ABOUT YOUR HOSTS & TEACHERS
ABOUT ROBIN
Robin Penney is a 500-hour Certified Yoga Teacher based in Santa Cruz, California. She believes that mindful movement through the practice of yoga has the capacity to change the world, one practice at a time! Her 1×1 private sessions and group slow-flow Vinyasa classes are thoughtfully creative, full of variety, appropriately challenging to all levels, and guided by a strong connection to breath.
Robin’s teaching style is informed by her many years of practice and training in a variety of approaches. She completed her 200-hour training under the Anusara Yoga method in 2012, and went on to study Kula Flow with Wanderlust co-founder, Schyuler Grant. Then in 2016, she received a 500-hour advanced yoga teaching certification in the Alchemy of Flow and Form with Christina Sell and Gioconda Parker. Most recently, her teaching is informed by evidence-based movement trainings from the world of biomechanics and exercise science.
Robin teaches international retreats in places like Costa Rica, Spain, Cuba, Santorini, and now California!
At this retreat, Robin will provide a tour of the body, breath, mind, and heart through the tools of functional movement added to the framework of the modern flow yoga practice and contemplative work. You’ll leave with ideas on how to nurture yourself daily through a practice that works for you, increase your controlled, pain-free range of motion, how to get down to the floor and up again creatively for graceful aging, a path toward greater strength to fuel living, and a deeper connection to your intuitive heart and soul.
ABOUT MARK
A self-professed “Cork Dork,” Mark is an Architect by day, and a wine hobbyist by night. Mark’s interest in all things wine led him to complete the International Sommelier Guild (ISG) “Wine Fundamentals Certificate – Levels 1 and 2” in 2013 and 2014 respectively, and in 2016, he went on to complete the Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET) “Level 3 Award in Wines and Spirits”, completing the course with distinction. Mark firmly believes that knowledge informs the palate, and he is enthusiastic about sharing what he has learned with anyone who is interested in wine. He also enjoys continuing to learn from others who know more.
Mark is particularly interested in the regional characteristics that manifest themselves in wine as a result of geography, climate, soil, and tradition. These things provide a context in which to taste, compare, contrast and understand the wine, resulting in a deeper appreciation not just for the wine itself, but for its intimate connection to place, and the people who produced it.
At this retreat, Mark will facilitate a wine experience that will expose you to wines from the local Central Coast area, and to wines from other parts of the world that are worthy of comparison. Through this comparison, you will learn a little about what you’re drinking as well as simply enjoy the wine.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Do I need to be an advanced yogi to join this retreat?
Absolutely not! The yoga and movement that Robin teaches is accessible to all levels, and will be offered in a way that will be appropriately challenging and nurturing, both to yoga newbies and to those who’ve practiced for years. We just ask that you be open to listening to your body, paying attention to sensations, and to trying new things!
I have dietary restrictions – is this retreat able to accommodate me?
Sagrada Wellness serves locally sourced, organic, vegetarian food and is 90% vegan; please email us to inquire about other dietary needs.
I don’t have anyone to go with – can you find me a roommate?
Due to the accomodation options at Sagrada, the Communal Room will be the best option for you in this case.
What's the weather like in November?
It will be pleasant during the day (average of 70 degrees Fahrenheit) and cool at night (can be in the mid to low 40s). Bring layers (sweaters, socks, scarves are great). Visitors to Northern California are frequently surprised at how chilly it can be when the sun isn’t up! It could always rain, but that’s not likely. Best to be prepared with an umbrella.
If I only drink white wine or red wine, can you accommodate me?
We won’t be able to provide a separate tasting flight based on everyone’s preferences. So those who enjoy both red and white wine and are open to trying new things will get the most out of this adventure.
Can I "party" on this retreat?
In a word, No. Though we will be serving wine as a component of this retreat, Sagrada is a family home and there are children who live on the premises. Quiet hours will be enforced. We ask that you conduct yourself responsibly and with grace.
Can I bring my kids?
This retreat will be an adult-only getaway. Participants must be over 21 years of age, due to the wine component for this retreat.
Do I need a passport?
Yes, if you’re traveling from outside the United States, you need to have a passport.
What's the best way to get to the retreat center from the airport?
Renting a car is a great option, especially if you’re planning to extend your trip to explore the beautiful state of California before or after the retreat. The best major airports to fly into are San Jose (SJC) or San Francisco (SFO). If you fly into San Luis Obispo (a regional airport), you can take a Lyft ride to the center. Please reach out with specific questions!
Anything else I should know?

How can I reach you if I have further questions?
You can email us at [email protected] or call 831-713-6533 (Pacific Time Zone).
The week was amazing under Melanie and Robin’s leadership!
I don’t really know how you could improve it. I came away feeling happy, refreshed, well nurtured and generally shiny and new! So thank you so much to you both for a wonderful week which I shall never forget, and which will keep me coming back for more.
